Inmarsat's fifth Global Xpress satellite, GX5, will be launched by Arianespace from the Guiana Space Centre, Europe's spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana.

The Very High Throughput Satellite (V-HTS) will be carried into geostationary transfer orbit by an Ariane 5 heavy-lift launcher before being manoeuvred into position 35,786km (22,236 miles) above Earth.

GX5 will significantly boost Inmarsat's Global Xpress network capacity, meeting growing demand for reliable mobile broadband connectivity across Europe and the Middle East.

Based on Thales Alenia Space's upgraded Spacebus 4000 B2 platform, GX5 will deliver more capacity than the entire existing GX fleet (GX1-GX4) combined.

GX5 marks the first step in a journey that will see the capabilities, capacity and agility of Global Xpress totally transformed – both for new and existing customers – with a further seven launches scheduled over the next four years:

GX1-10B

The GX satellite service dates are given as a guide only and are subject to change.

  • Advanced Ka-band payloads will be hosted on our next generation Inmarsat-6 (I-6) L-band satellites, GX6A & 6B, for the coming 5G era.
  • GX7, 8 & 9 will transform the way we design, deliver and operate our infrastructure, from satellites and ground stations, to terminals and network management.
  • Two satellite payloads, GX10A & 10B, will be placed into Highly Elliptical Orbits (HEO), ensuring continuous coverage above 65° North and enhanced Arctic capabilities.
